What Is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras is one of the most popular Catholic carnivals and celebrates the close of the Pre-Lenten season. The celebration can be traced back to medieval Europe and often lasts for weeks leading up to the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, when 40 days of Lent fasting begin until Easter. Historically, Fat Tuesday is all about eating all the fats at home before a season of fasting!

Although Louisiana is the only state where it's a legal holiday, the entire United States offers Mardi Gras celebrations, especially in states like Alabama and Mississippi. No matter where you are, there's likely to be a way to celebrate.

How is Mardi Gras celebrated?

Mardi Gras is famous for its parades, galas, parties, exclusive masquerades, and everything in between. New Orleans has some of the best celebrations, with vibrant decorations, amazing food, and hundreds of people bedazzled in purple, green, and gold. Some of the most popular costume ideas include fairies, animals, mythological figures, and Medieval characters. Colorful wigs and eye-catching tinsel costumes are some of the best items for this day.

When Is Mardi Gras in 2023?

After pandemic shutdowns and complications, Mardi Gras as we know and love it is back again. The festival will commence on Tuesday, February 21, but the carnival season begins on the feast of Epiphany, which is January 6.
